December Member Spotlight – Reg Walls

I have lived in Brisbane for 35 years, having moved from New South Wales in my job at the time. Married to Bev and have two adult children.

During my working career I have largely been involved in the financial world. This has consisted of 37 years with a major bank, followed by 5 years self employed as a franchise bookkeeper which again was followed by 4 years self employed as a finance broker involving home loans, commercial finance and vehicle finance. I retired from the paid workforce in 2008 just in time for the GFC to take hold. A few anxious months in relation to superannuation values, however survived.

Following retirement I took a more active role in Sunnybank RSL Sub Branch where I had been a member since 2005. I became Senior Vice President until 2011 when I stood down from executive positions. I remain a member and become involved in special events including Remembrance Day and ANZAC Day as well as other events.

I have been a member of Mt Gravatt Bowls Club since late 1991 where I have held the voluntary position of Business Manager since 2009, involved primarily in obtaining grants and sponsorship for the Club as well as other minor matters.

On a personal note, I have two events in my life that stand out in my mind. The first is being called up as a National Serviceman from 1967 to 1969, 12 months of that time in an Australian Army unit in Vung Tau, South Vietnam.

The second was walking the 96 km Kokoda Track in October 2016, with a group from Mates 4 Mates,  a couple of months before my 70th birthday. Probably the most difficult thing physically I have done, but at the same time, most rewarding to gain an appreciation of what out troops went through in 1942. It is physically demanding, the hills just don’t seem to end. I still do smaller “Treks” having completed the Bridge to Brisbane 10km this and some other recent years and the Remembrance Day Red Run being 8.3km over the terrain around the Enoggera Dam. Keeps the heart ticking.

My intention is to keep doing these activities whilst the body and mind will allow.
